Grand Turk And Salt Cay Islands Online Travel Guide

Situated on Grand Turk, Cockburn Town serves as the administrative, cultural, and historical center of the Turks and Caicos archipelago. 19th century houses and old street lamps decorate the long streets, offering visitors a charming glimpse of the island's history. With landmarks and attractions very close to each other, this town makes a great place to visit on foot.

Cockburn Town hosts the famous Turks and Caicos National Museum, one of the oldest stone buildings in the island chain. This museum features the rich history of the Turks before and after European influence with artifacts of the Taino, African, North American, Bermudian, French, and Latin American settlers. Explore the replicated, walk-in Lucayan cave, filled with relics of the civilization. Another exhibit displays Grand Turk's in the space race during the 1960's. In 1962, Lieutenant Colonel John Glenn arrived at Grand Turk after the USS Noa picked him up from his spacecraft, the Friendship 7, where it landed in the Atlantic Ocean close to the shores of Grand Turk.

See the Molasses Reef wreck, the earliest shipwreck discovered in the Americas, dating back as early as 1500. An entire floor exhibits all that scientists and archeologists discovered about the shipwreck, excavated in the 1980's. Though treasure hunters once dynamited the wreck before excavation, many parts remain intact, including cannons, pieces of the hull, and tools. Some even speculate that this ship belonged to Christopher Columbus, named Nina.

Walk the streets of Cockburn and view the 18th and 19th century architecture. Brightly colored buildings adorn the streets as well as 19th century street lamps, now lit by electricity. Sit under shaded benches and watch for shy flamingos as they wade in the shallows. Enjoy the laidback environment of the hotels and restaurants.

Cockburn Town delights and enchants visitors with antiquity and history. Take a walking tour of this place and fall in love with the sunny Caribbean atmosphere in the primary municipality of Grand Turk Island.
